Pass-Along Plants
The last weeks were the hardest.
Even so, you asked me to prop a basket of fresh
Blooming daffodils on a stool
At the foot of your bed,
And you nodded in quiet satisfaction,
Still able to enjoy beauty…
Still a beholder, even then.
Later when the daffodils insisted their bright yellow
Flowers against the vestiges of a lingering winter,
I did not see the beauty in them,
I could not even look at them.
The thought of your last interest
In beholding what is beautiful
Offended my weary heart.
Sometimes now
The sunshine floods my kitchen
With a light that bathes
The would be beauty
Of your plants
In moment
